Best Buy claims BlackBerry PlayBook blew past expectations

Best Buy in a mobile promo roundup has given out a clue as to early adoption rate for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The big-box retail chain said it had already had "very high" hopes based on its BlackBerry phone experience and "far exceeded" its expectations in the more than a week of initial sales. Actual sales of the tablet weren't given out.

Having the tablet in a store demo mattered, since shoppers were "more interested" in buying after they tried the PlayBook, Best Buy said.
The statements didn't equate to complete feedback outside numbers as they omitted other retailers like Office Depot. They may reflect the hot and cold sales performance witnessed through numerous retail checks, where sales were brisk at some stores but near-absent at others. Sellouts were few and partly reflected the initial supply rather than interest alone.

RIM's real performance won't be clear until June, when it reports its first quarter of PlayBook sales. It already expects sales to be on track even as its phone sales will run low due to stiff competition. None of the results will compare to that of Apple, which moved 4.69 million iPads in the winter even with supply and a model transition. Its own spring quarter results will be reported in July and are predicted to be much higher as international releases and boosted supply help improve Apple's numbers.
